As Hong Kong is known for shopping\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0part of the reason why Hong Kong is called a shopping Paradise is how much designer clothing is sold in Hong Kong. It goes all the way from people from\u00a0low-income\u00a0family,\u00a0thanks to credit cards,\u00a0to people with expensive,\u00a0exquisite taste. So even girl\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0a teen\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0for\u00a0people who\u00a0always\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0who\u00a0obviously have the money to afford it, then it&#8217;s great they could do it obviously\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0walk out\u00a0in\u00a0stylish,\u00a0fashionable, up-to-date gear. But even for people from\u00a0low-income\u00a0families such as teenage girl, they&#8217;ll save up for months of money just to have this tiny,\u00a0tiny designer bag.\u00a0So\u00a0from that you can see the influences of the popularity of designer clothing and bags.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>E:\u00a0So why do people want to wear\u00a0designer\u00a0clothing?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>S:\u00a0I think,\u00a0Hong\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0Chinese people\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0Asia culture is known to values the idea of faces.\u00a0So\u00a0they like to save\u00a0faces.\u00a0So\u00a0having\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0being able to own\u00a0a\u00a0designer\u00a0item\u00a0means you have the wealth for it.\u00a0So\u00a0it kinds of save\u00a0faces and it gives you the approval from the\u00a0society of\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0that&#8217;s, you know,\u00a0being able to afford expensive items is the considerations or the standard of how it&#8217;s considered as you&#8217;ve made it, you have get to a certain point to acknowledge your ability and your wealth and your job as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>E:\u00a0Alright, let&#8217;s turn now to the type of clothes that people wear to work. Do you think people at work make judgments about their colleagues based on the kind of clothes they wear?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>S:\u00a0I think it quite depends on the working atmosphere. Because nowadays a lot of\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0a company&#8217;s known to be more open with their\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0with their clothing, they would have\u00a0certain day\u00a0where you should do suits and ties, sometimes smart casual, sometimes you can go in with really comfortable clothing as well. But I think obviously, whenever, whenever someone sees you the first time,\u00a0they see your face, the second thing would be your clothing.\u00a0So\u00a0it really affects someone&#8217;s first impression. And if you go for professional job in unprofessional gear, then obviously people would not respect you or validates your\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0how\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0about how professional you would be with the job.\u00a0So\u00a0I think quite depends on the workplace of what kind of\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0if it&#8217;s a place that you need to be in professional clothing, then you need it for people to validate you. If not, then you would be comfortable with anything and people would be fine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>E:\u00a0Do you think in some workplaces\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0people are told what they should wear by their employer\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0do you think that&#8217;s reasonable?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>S:\u00a0Yes, I think that&#8217;s part of the job.\u00a0So\u00a0if you&#8217;re\u00a0gonna\u00a0need to do the job or dressing the part, as people put it as part of the job, they kind of paid you to do that. Like being a teacher\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0putting in dress shirt and trousers, not only show that you respect the workplace, it also\u00a0shows you,\u00a0how professional you are with how serious you&#8217;re taking your job. And for example, being a lawyer\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0same\u00a0as well. You need to be in a suit because people\u00a0is\u00a0paying for your opinion. You need to dress the part to make sure you know what you do. It &#8230; in\u00a0kind of way\u00a0it\u00a0tells people you know what you&#8217;re doing.\u00a0You,\u00a0you&#8217;re able to put\u00a0yourself together\u00a0to be able to give validate professional advice that people\u00a0pays\u00a0for. Otherwise, if you\u00a0work in a\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0in a Cha\u00a0chaan\u00a0teng\u00a0or like a\u00a0so-called\u00a0local restaurant, then you could be in jeans, sneakers,\u00a0people\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0matter, because people really cares about is where you&#8217;re able to provide basic services. And your clothing would not affect how people consider whether you&#8217;ll be able to do your job properly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>E:\u00a0In Hong Kong, do you think that the way people dress for work has changed in recent years?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>S:\u00a0I would agree so\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0as\u00a0Hong Kong has always known to be an international city, so it got a lot of Western influences. And as Western influences\u00a0nowaday\u00a0would propose the idea of being comfortable with your workplace\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0kind of treating your workplace as your home\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0so\u00a0it goes all the way from comfortable clothing to even allowing you bring pets or your children to, to,\u00a0to work. And all of these shows that people are getting less strict with rules.
