And now I&#8217;d like to ask you some more general questions related to that. Let&#8217;s consider, first of all, designer\u00a0clothing.\u00a0Are\u00a0designer clothes popular in your country?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>S:\u00a0Well,\u00a0yes\u00a0as\u00a0the short answer. The longer answer would be\u00a0that there&#8217;s a very strong class disparity. So the rich are the richest and\u00a0the poor are\u00a0the\u00a0poorest. And so to kind of exacerbate that\u00a0&#8220;oh I am better than you&#8221;, people do like to buy designer clothing as more of a statement, rather than fashion choice.\u00a0So that&#8217;s the reason for popularity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>E:\u00a0So, apart from the status issue. Why do you think people like to wear designer clothing?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>S:\u00a0Humans are creatures of hubris. I feel like we need things that not only set us apart but also make us conform to our larger society. And designer clothing, in a way, does do that because, well, no\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0not everybody can afford it or wants to buy\u00a0or\u00a0wants to purchase it. There is that class of people who do,\u00a0so while they are setting themselves apart,\u00a0they are still buying themselves to society. And I feel like designer,\u00a0not\u00a0only\u00a0clothing,\u00a0designer goods themselves that kind of exacerbate that phenomena\u00a0of\u00a0&#8220;I am unique, but just like everybody else&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>E:\u00a0Do you think that the world would be better off without designer clothing, since they seem to be taking advantage of less than desirable human qualities?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>S:\u00a0Well, is that a bad thing, though?\u00a0You know, we\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0I feel in a larger capitalist society, you\u00a0can&#8217;t really say whether or not the distribution of a specific\u00a0type of\u00a0good is\u00a0in\u00a0positive or negative. But at the end of the day, I feel like\u00a0we, we\u00a0have this moral standard where if you&#8217;re proud and that&#8217;s a negative thing. Maybe that&#8217;s just how some people choose to live in\u00a0their\u00a0live. They&#8217;re spending their money on things that don&#8217;t really matter. And then that is,\u00a0in the end of the day, their loss.\u00a0So I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0epidemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>E:\u00a0Let&#8217;s turn now to the clothes that people wear to work.\u00a0Do\u00a0you think people at work make judgments about their colleagues based on the type of clothing\u00a0they wear?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>S:\u00a0Yes, again, short answer. Longer answer would be, this is\u00a0very true, at least in the more Eastern hemisphere, where there&#8217;s the concept of professionalism and a code of conduct as you&#8217;re moving in and out of work and in violation of that is seen as either disrespectful or inappropriate\u00a0or both. And I feel that the thing that you just said about judgment,\u00a0I think it&#8217;s more based in\u00a0how women dress and the judgment is passed, based on\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0between other women majority of the time, as to what is\u00a0considered revealing too masculine or\u00a0too\u00a0feminine or is it appropriate enough for that workplace or is it alluring to the male co-workers. I feel like that is often a, a\u00a0topic of conversation at least\u00a0in the background.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>E:\u00a0Some employers actually set a certain standard and even require their employees to wear a uniform. Do you think that people should be forced to wear certain\u00a0clothes\u00a0at work?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>S:\u00a0I feel like\u00a0there\u00a0can\u00a0be a model of appropriacy\u00a0because at the same time kind of\u00a0unanimising\u00a0all spheres of human interaction into one saying that,\u00a0&#8220;oh, I should be allowed to wear what I want&#8221;\u00a0is,\u00a0is,\u00a0is a little bit of an individualistic concept, which I don&#8217;t think would be flying in at\u00a0least this part of the\u00a0world. I think there should be limits inside of which people can\u00a0dress\u00a0the way they want as long as they address the fact that they are in a different space than, say,\u00a0in their bedroom,\u00a0or\u00a0out with a friend and there should be\u00a0distinction\u00a0like that in the workplace.\u00a0As far as a uniform goes, I feel like that is a little\u00a0too redundant on an adult population. I feel like they should know to dress themselves in a way that it doesn&#8217;t display social class. But again, that could be a problem\u00a0given\u00a0that\u00a0they\u00a0don&#8217;t.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>E:\u00a0Alright.\u00a0Thank you very much.
