Long turns and consistently fluent speech are positive features of this performance. Mid-sentence reformulations are frequent but generally they do not interfere with the flow of speech. A range of discourse markers and connectives is used though with a noticeable over-dependence on ‘so’ for the latter.
A wide range of vocabulary allows the candidate to speak at length and respond in detail. The candidate is able to use less common words and expressions with considerable flexibility. Some minor errors occur but the meaning is always communicated clearly.
Error-free sentences are common and the candidate’s speech is rich in grammatical complexity with flexible use of a full range of subordinate clauses. Some systematic errors are evident, particularly the persistent use of present simple tenses for narrative segments relating to the past.
A few minor phonetic inaccuracies hardly detract from the exceptional clarity of the candidate’s performance. Stress and intonation are expertly used to enhance the message over long utterances. Chunking is also well managed though the numerous reformulations occasionally have a negative impact in this area.
