Fluent and often quite rapid speech maintained over long utterances. The use of complex language and discussion of issues involving a high level of sophistication do not result in any diminishment of the native-like fluency that characterizes the candidate’s performance throughout. Any hesitations or mid-sentence reformulations are associated with content rather than language issues.
An impressive range of vocabulary is employed, allowing the candidate to answer all questions at length and to effectively explore linguistically challenging topics.
Despite a few inappropriate word choices, the candidate demonstrates excellent control of less common words, idiomatic speech and collocation.
Minor grammatical mistakes occur but never affect comprehension. The majority of sentences are free of errors.
Frequent long and grammatically complex sentences feature a full range of subordinate clauses. A range of verb tenses, modality and passive forms is also used accurately and flexibly.
Native-like control of stress and intonation allows the communication of subtle shades of meaning involving messages such as disapproval, irony and humour. The candidate demonstrates total control of phonetic accuracy and accent has no impact on the precision of her speech.
