The candidate is usually able to keep going but in order to do so generally relies on hesitation, repetition, self-correction and sometimes slow speech.
A limited range of connectives is used with overreliance on certain conjunctions (especially ‘and’, ‘because’) and discourse markers (especially ‘and then’).
On several occasions, misunderstandings of questions result in momentary break-downs in coherence.
The candidate has sufficient resources to respond meaningfully to most questions but inappropriate word choices and collocations sometimes make the message difficult to follow. An inability to elaborate many answers also points to a restricted range.
Frequently repeated lexis indicates a limited ability to paraphrase.
Errors are frequent with verb forms and choice of tenses being particular problems.
Subordinate clauses are common but invariably contain errors, some of which impact meaning.
The candidate can generally be understood. However, phonemes are sometimes mispronounced and consonants are frequently omitted, resulting in a lack of precision.
The candidate attempts to produce intonation with limited success but sentence stress is rarely used.
There are some patches of connected speech but overall chunking is impacted by slow speech and break-downs in fluency.
